Rodena Tharpe

piano/keyboarding/viola/violin/Beginning Guitar

Mrs. Rodena L. Tharpe is a dedicated violist and pedagogue. For 30 years, she has been studying and developing her skill, and is a staple musician in the Tennessee Valley area. She began her studies at the Memphis State University Suzuki Children’s Program at Memphis State

University at the young age of 6. She moved to Huntsville, AL and continued studies with Art Cotruvo, Melanie Richardson, Barbara Poularikas, Lee Coker(Julliard grad), Dan Nedelcu and Charles Hogue(principal violist of HSO) in whom she studied with at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. She has attended masterclasses with Itzhak Perlman(violinist), and performed for

a masterclass given by Marcus Thompson(violist). She has performed in a small ensembles with

Smokie Robinson and the Black Jacket Symphony. As a chamber musician, she performs regularly with the Blue Sky Quartet/Quintet, and Felicity String Quartet. She has also performed with various chamber groups such as the: Valley Conservatory Chamber Orcherstra,

Gateways Music Festival(Eastman School of Music)Chamber Orchestra and Quartet, Mimosa String Quartet, the Interlochen Music Camp Quartet, and many others.

As an orchestra musician she has performed with various organizational and church orchestras, Huntsville Symphony Orchestra, Shoals Symphony Orchestra, Valley Conservatory Lyceum Orchestra, Gateways Music Festival Orchestra, UAH Collegium Orchestra, the former Huntsville Opera Theater Orchestra, Interlochen National Music Camp Orchestra, Huntsville

Youth Symphony, and Metro Youth Orchestra. As a soloist she has received outstanding and

performance awards from the Alabama Orchestra Association. She has made guest appearances

in the Virgin Islands, and local and regional churches. Currently Mrs. Tharpe teaches with Valley Conservatory, Adjunct University Instructor, and also gives private lessons in viola, violin, and piano.

David Bond

David Bond studied music at the University of Alabama in Huntsville before finishing at Auburn University where he also earned minors in History, Economics, French and took a degree in International Business. David plays with various types of groups and orchestras around the area with differing styles and has been involved in various church music teams for 14 years. After working three years with the government in business, David taught high school literature, economics, math and government for three years before going full time into music. David has coached soccer for several years and has been an assistant scoutmaster in Boy Scouts. His specialty is Trumpet and Violin and also teaches Piano and Guitar. David is continuing his training in music and other fields but has come down to music teaching and playing as his passion. David uses his wide net of interests to bring a holistic approach to teaching and playing encouraging students to incorporate the uplifting ‘civilizing force’ of music into their whole lives.

Janet McTigue


Janet McTigue was born in Marietta, GA and relocated to Huntsville in 1977 when her father moved his music instrument repair business to the Tennessee Valley. Now residing in Madison, AL, Janet is raising her two daughters Ariel, 17, and Isabella, 8. With her mother a piano instructor, her grandfather Robert Glotzbach, a former professor of music at Florida State University, and her great aunt, a violin instructor and former Huntsville Symphony member, Janet’s background encompasses a family lineage with strong musical traditions. Presented on her first recital at the age of three, she performed in various events throughout the Huntsville area. In addition, between the ages of 10 to 18 she competed in several auditions, festivals and competitions at the local, state, regional, and national levels where she received superior ratings. At the age of 12, Janet earned the recognition as a gifted accompanist and has been accompanying and performing ever since. Janet attended The University of Alabama in Huntsville where she earned a Bachelor Degree in Piano Performance. She has accompanied several musicals including The Wind in the Willows, Oliver, The Man of La Mancha, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. A veteran teacher of more than 20 years, Janet is currently the Assistant Director of Recruitment and Public Relations at Valley Conservatory where she serves on the faculty and continues to perform and accompany throughout the Huntsville metropolitan area.
